  1. Introducing the Casio G-Shock 810B Series

Introducing, the Casio G-Shock, GA-810B Series

Welcome back to our blog. Last week, I introduced you to the GA710B series, and today I’ll be reviewing the GA-810B watches from Casio. This series actually came about based on how popular the GA-710s were, thanks to its golden makeover (for the GA710B review, click here). Ready to see what the fuss is about? Let’s get to it!

    ga-810b-1a4

First up is the GA-810B-1A4. The black band, bezel and buttons are offset by the illuminator button (rose gold metallic in colour), as well as the rose gold hour markers. This makes the analogue display shine, and grabs your attention right away. Even the gears controlling the hand have been glammed up. Because the hands and hour markers have thickened up considerably, that makes it easier to tell the analogue time.

    ga-810b-1a9_1

Then we have the GA-810B-1A9. This is the perfect watch if you dislike negative displays, as the numbers are large and on a regular screen. The numbers and text on the GA810B series are actually a lot larger, so even if you have bad eyesight, you’ll still be able to tell the digital time. The hands, illuminator button and hour markers are gold, and very thick, for easy readability of the analogue time.

So, let’s talk about some of the features. As part of the GA800 series, the GA810B has a step tracker/pedometer. This is a tool that’s essential if you’re into exercise, because not only will it tell you how many steps you’ve taken, you can program it with a specific goal in mind, and it will sound an alarm if you haven’t reached it within a specific amount of time. You can also use the stopwatch to time how long it too you to reach this goal, and save up to 120 records for later (that way you’ll be able to chart your progress).

The great thing about the GA-810 series is the Super Iluminator. That’s because unlike most analogue/digital combos, this new breed of watch can light up both the analogue and the digital part (which has always been a requested feature in these watches).

Another cool feature, which will benefit people who like to travel, is the dual time. This lets you, at the press of a button, swap between the time in your home city, and the time where you are now. If you’ve ever called somebody not realising it was 4 am there, you know just why this function is necessary!

  2. Introducing the Casio G-Shock 710B Series

Introducing the Casio G-Shock 710B Series

Welcome back to the blog! A while back, Casio decided to experiment with the GA-710 series, to make it look more eye catching. They came up with the GA710, which had metallic blue, silver and gold buttons, hands and hour markers. With the response being overwhelmingly positive, Casio went further, and gave us the GA710B series, as well as the 810B (which will be covered later). Ready to see what makes these watches tick? Here we go!

    GA-710B-1A4

First up is the GA710B-1A4. This watch has a completely black band, bezel and buttons, except for the backlight button, which is in a metallic rose gold. Inside the display the rose gold motif continues, with the hands and hour markers, as well as the feature display also being a rose gold colour. The digital part has a negative display, which is light numbers on a black background.

    GA-710B-1A9

If you’re not a fan of this sort of display, then you’ll want the GA710B-1A9. Now, at first glance, it looks very similar to the GA-710GB-1A (both are black with a gold motif), however, while the 710GB had a gold backdrop surrounding the display, the GA710B gets rid of that feature, leaving more room inside the display to see the time. Best of all, it’s got a regular display, so if the black one is hard for you to read, you won’t have such problems with this model.

So what are some of the features of the GA710B series? Well, first up it’s got what’s known as a super illuminator. This feature lights up both the analogue and digital screens, so at night you can read both screens. The thick hands and hour markers mean that analogue is easily seen, and getting rid of the metallic backdrop let Casio increase the size of both the Analogue and Digital display (making it easier to read).

While the digital display is pretty big, due to the size of the analogue hands, they can sometimes obscure the digital time. There’s an easy solution though, because this watch has a hand shift feature. This will move the analogue hands back to default (12 0’clock) letting you easily see the digital time. Once you’re done, press the Mode button, and the hands will return not just to where they were, but where they would have been had you not turned on the hands shift feature!

One of the best features of the GA710B is the direct start stopwatch. Basically, you no longer need to go searching through the menus for the stopwatch, just press the button and be ready to run (or time your friends). This stopwatch has a new trick too, called the target time alarm. If you’re getting ready for a race (or even if you’re doing practice VCE Exams), you can set the stopwatch to a specific length of time. If you’re unable to do what you set out to do, the target time alarm rings. Having this will definitely help you improve.

  3. Introducing the Citizen Promaster Diving Watch, the BN0194-57E

Introducing the Citizen Promaster Diving Watch, the BN0194-57E

There are lots of watches out there that are water resistant, but only a few are certified and meet ISO Specifications. Lucky for you, the Promaster series is one of them. Whether you like surfing, or work on a ship/ferry, the BN0194-57E is not only tough, but looks good. Let me tell you a little bit about some of the features. Ready? Here We Go!

    bn0194-57e

First up, this model is entirely stainless steel, from case, to band and bezel. Said band is a mix of silver and gold, while the bezel is black and gold. The hands and hour markers are white and gold, as well as very thick, which makes them easily seen on the black display.

Apart from the case, the watch has a gold screw lock crown, with the bezel itself looking like the gears on a clock. Altogether, the watch looks really impressive on your wrist, even without getting into some of the special features.

Now, as mentioned, the watch is a certified diving watch. This means it's able to withstand up to 200m of water pressure. If you're swimming in the ocean, you might be worrying about the seawater, but the stainless steel case and bracelet are durable enough to prevent any corrosive damage, so your watch will function perfectly.

The bezel itself also serves a function apart from looking good. Before starting a dive, you can rotate the bezel so the 12 o'clock position is in sync with the time that you submerge yourself. This way, when you're underwater, you'll know exactly how long you've been swimming, and when to start making your way back in order to make sure you don't run out of oxygen!

The screw lock crown mentioned earlier, also serves an important function. You need to make sure it's screwed in shut before you dive in, because it keeps the water from getting into the gears. So no fiddling with it when you're down there!

Apart from being a diving watch, the BN0194-57E is also an Eco-Drive, which means it will keep running for up to 180 days before you need to charge it up. Charging it is very simple too - just expose it to light (whether sunlight or electrical). You'll have plenty of warning though, since the second hand will start skipping seconds when it's close to low battery power.

  4. Dress to Impress, with the Citizen Metal AW1240-57L Watch

Dress to Impress, with the Citizen METAL AW1240-57L

First impressions can make or break that all important meeting (whether an interview, or a date), so you need to look your best. That's where the Citizen METAL Series comes in. Welcome to our blog and today, I'll be talking about the AW1240-57L. Ready? Here We Go!

    aw1240-57l_1

Right from the start, you'll notice this watch looks sleek. That's because, unlike a lot of others, this time piece isn't stainless steel. The whole thing is made up of titanium! Now, that may make it a little heavier than most, but it also means the watch is a lot harder to damage.

That durability also extends to the display, which is protected by a scratch resistant sapphire glass. The dial is a dark blue, and looks great on your wrist.

This is a completely analogue model, with a basic design. The hour markers, as well as hands are very easy to see due to them being extra thick, and there's also a date dial at the 3 o'clock marker.

Part of the Eco-Drive models, the watch is powered by light (any sort of light, not just sunlight), so you won't have to worry about changing the batteries for a long time. This model is also water resistant to 100m, so as long as you don't press any buttons while submerged, you can go swimming with the watch, without worrying about it getting stolen or damaged!

The AW1240-57L is out now. For our other Citizens, click here.

Until Next Time - Jimmy B

  5. What Is Eco-Drive?

    What is Eco-Drive?

Introduced to the world in 1995, Citizen Eco-Drive watches became an instant hit! After all, who wants to bother with changing batteries every couple of years? It's too much of a hassle! Welcome to our Citizen Section, and if you haven't already guessed, today I'll be talking about Citizens Eco-Drive series. Ready? Here we go.

Before we start, when I describe some parts of the watches, I might refer to something called "caliber movement". That is just Citizen's version of a Module (which is what gives the watches their features).

As mentioned before, the Eco-Drives came out in 1995. The technology that made it possible was the Caliber 7878 movement. This particular movement was the first one to be able to absorb light, by leaving enough room for tiny solar cells to sit directly on the dial. These cells were so small, that unless you were specifically looking for them, you wouldn't be able to find them.

In order to take full advantage of a solar watch however, you'd need batteries that would hold the charge. Just a solar panel isn't enough. That's why the Eco-Drive movements included titanium rechargeable, or secondary batteries. Thanks to those secondary batteries, once the watch is fully charged, they'll last 180 days before you need to charge them up again.

Here's the best part though. Unlike true "Solar" watches, Eco-Drive could absorb light from any source, whether sunlight, or electrical! And because the batteries themselves are rechargeable, that pretty much eliminates the need to change the batteries, unless they themselves fail.

Citizen could have just coasted on this achievement, but they decided to go further. In our Citizen Section of the store, you'll find simple analogue watches, but you'll also find other types. Some with Chronographs, even Diving watches. The evolution of the movements ensured that Citizen could still offer Eco-Drive watches and make them more advanced! There are watches that pilots use, as well as Wave models (which synchronise themselves with a GPS Satellite, perfect when travelling overseas).

Check out our range of Citizen Watches, and if you don't find what you're looking for, give us a shout! More and more models will be making their way here soon!

Until Next Time - Jimmy B

    100b-4a-1

    7) GA-110-1B - While the GA-100 series revolutionised the ana/digi combo, the GA-110 perfected it. Yet another military preferred watch, it will light up the analogue hands, but with just enough light to show you the time, without giving your position away.

    ga-110-1b_l

That's just what they get with the G-8900A-1, as the face keeps the enlarged look of the GA-100, while getting rid of the analogue part entirely. The face itself is a unique blue colour, which will definitely draw some attention.

    4) G-9000-1V - The original Mudman, this model is great if you've got a dirty job. Fully digital, it has a special component that prevents mud from clogging up any of the gears or the module itself. Perfect present for somebody going through bootcamp!

Under the mineral glass, the hands and hour markers are extra thick, and a mixture of black and grey, which makes them easily seen on the light blue background, so you're able to see the analogue time. The digital display is also well lit, with the day in the top window, and time at the bottom.

Then we have the BA110CF-7A. Now, while the black watch could have passed for a boy's model, the white and pink BA-110CF-7A is definitely for the girls. As mentioned, it's mostly white, with the band being covered by both pink flowers as well as grey ones for some variety.

The display is extra-large letting you see both the analogue and digital display. The analogue hands are thick and black, while the hour markers are white, all on a pink background, which will draw your eyes and make it easier to see the analogue time. The digital display is identical to the 110CF-1A so you shouldn't have any problems reading the time.

So that's what the watches look like, but how do they perform? Well, let's find out!

Now, as you may have guessed by the model number, the BA110CFs are a version of the BA-110 series, and they keep all of the essential functions. First off, the hands and hour markers are covered with a neobrite solution, so if it gets too dark, press the backlight button, and the hands and hour markers will start glowing even after the backlight turns off.

The BA-110CF series is one of the most lightweight models, weighing only 45g, so they're easy on your wrist, and won't weigh you down when you run/jog. They're also 100M water resistant, so you can swim with them as long as you don't press any buttons while you're submerged.

Unlike my previous columns, these watches aren't coming soon, they already HERE! So click here for the 110CF-1A and here for the 110CF-7A
